Chittoor Tourism

The tourism of Chittoor centres around not only the city but the whole district as well. Chittoor is known for Tirupati, Kanipakam (Talakona and Horsely Hill) and Sri Kalahasti temple. Chittoor receives the maximum number of tourist both national and international all through the year. The tourism department is trying to complete the ongoing developmental work on different sites under Tourism Heritage Corridor. 

Some of the popular tourist places in Chittoor and Chittoor district are Narayanavanam, Surutupalle, Bokkasam Palam, Srinivasa Mangapuram and Srikalahasti, Gudimallam, Chandragiri Fort, Srivari Mettu, and Kanipakkam temple. It also has Forest reserve, Deer park, Masonics Chittoor sports stadium, Sugar Factory, temples, etc. Trekking can also be enjoyed in Chittoor at Chase pillar, Bodi Konda, Yelampalli forest, Puligundu and Turtle Neck Hill. The nearby tourist spots are Kanipakam, Ardhagiri, Thalakona, Thangal, Vepanjeri, Vinayaka Puram, Saibaba Temple, Talakona Waterfall, Kailasakona, Tirupati Balaji – Tirumala temple, Goddesses Padmavathi temple, Krishna river lighthouse, Chandragiri Fort, Gurram Konda Fort, Horsey Hills, S.V. Zoological Park, Kaundinya Wildlife, Akasa Ganga, Kaigal WaterFalls, Kalyani Dam, Papavinasam, Swamy Pushkarini, Ubbala Madugu Falls, Sadasiva Kona, Moola Kona, NTR Jalasayam, Science Centre, and Sila Thoranam.

Best time to visit this place is winter season in the month of October-February.

Chandragiri Fort


Tourist Places in Chittoor

The fort is located near Tirupati. It came into existence in 1000 AD which was later controlled by Vijaya Nagar Empires. The fort reflects the beautiful architecture of Vijaya Nagar which is built on a huge rock above 183mts high. The campus of the Fort has beautiful built up palaces and temples. The two buildings near fort are called Mahals which was used by royal families.

Talakona 

Chittoor Tourism

The place is known for beautiful natural waterfalls in the forest and is therefore a very popular shotting spot for film-makers.It is also known for the temple of Sri Siddheswara Swamy. The crowd can be spotted at this place on weekends, New Year eve and on the occasion of Mahashivratri. The distance between waterfall and temple is four kilo meters.

Sri Veera Vijaya Anjaneya Swamy temple

It is one of the oldest temples in Rayalaseema region. The history of the temple dates back to 1900. The monument of the Lord Hanuman is carved on the stone located on small hill.  The villagers renovated the temple some 10 years back. Huge crowd gathers in the premises of the temple on Chaitra Purnima, Hanuman Jayanti, and Vrataa Diksha.

Horsley hill is a summer resort cum picnic spot with beautiful site all around. It is located near Madanpalli in Chittoor District. At a height of 4200ft above sea level lies two houses known as the Kachari Room and Milk Bungalow which were later developed as summer resort. The place was first identified as summer resort by Mr.W.D.Horsley, a British civil service man who later became the District Collector of Cuddapah. Other places worth visiting at Horsley hills are Governor’s Bungalow, Forest Bumgalow, Microwave station, View Point and Enugumallamma temple.

NTR Jalasayam

NTR Jalasayam is located in Kalavakunta village (Penumoor Mandal) near Chittoor. It serves as the main drinking water source for the city Chittoor. Chittoor is still a developing city but houses all head offices of the district.

Temples in Chittoor

The famous temple of Lord Venkateshwara and Goddesses Padmavathi located in Tirumala on the hill top and on the foot of the hill Tirupati. It is one of the most visited Hindu religious places in India. The numbers of tourists visiting this religious place are millions in a year. It is a place that makes Chittoor district rich by generating highest revenue among all other districts of Andhra Pradesh. 
  

Srikalahasti

Srikalahasti is located on the bank of Swarnamukhi. Dakshina Kailasam temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Hindu holy temple opens on the day of solar eclipse. The temple is located on the bank of the river and on the foot hill. There are three Gopurams of the temple reflects the remarkable architecture of the Chola Kings. The famous art form Kalamkari of textile painting originated from this place. The main gate of the temple known as Rajagopuram collapsed in the year 2010. The temple is known as “Dakshina Kaashi”.

Swayambu Sri Pathala Vinayaka temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara located in Pandiguttoor village.  Swayambu means self made and Pathala means temple located beneath earth. The temple is also known as Vakra Vinayaka temple. The temple was founded in 1997. In 1997 the Folk dance master taught and performed dance in Gopalakrishna Puram. The folk dance master one night dreamt about the swayambu idol located in the natural pond.

Sri Venkateshwara National Park

Parks near Chittoor

It is a national park and biosphere reserve covering an area of about 353Km sq. There are many natural waterfalls around this park. The national park is located in the Eastern Ghats spread over the Seshachalam Hills. The vegetation in this area is dry and moist deciduous type. The flora of the place is excellent containing 1500 vascular plant of about 174 families. The flora includes red Sanders, Shorea talura, Sandalwood, Psilotum nudam, etc. The national park has rich fauna having 178 species of birds including yellow throated bulbul, Pompadour Green Pigeon, Oriental white black Vulture, etc. the wild animals found here are Leopard, wild dog, Hyena, Golden jackal, Indian Fox, etc. The reptiles found in the park include Gliding Lizard, Golden Gecko, etc. The zoological park is located on the foot of the Seshachalam hills. The zoo covers an area of more than 5500 acres (2200 hectares).

Puli Gundu

Puli Gundu is a natural 1000 ft dual rock. It has lord Shiva temple at the base. The shape of the rock is similar to shivling of Lord Shiva.

Moola Kona

A place which has a temple, waterfall and a hill. It is a good picnic spot, trekking point and religious spot.

Kaigal Falls


Kaigal water fall also known as Dumukuralla Water Fall is a famous picnic spot. Best time to visit is during rainfall between June-October. It is located at a distance of 2.5km from Kaigal Village on the Palamner-Kuppam highway. The sound of the fall resembles the sound of the fall of stones from above. This natural water fall is at a height of 40mt high. The natural water pond and the water passing through sand plains make the place more attractive. The place is surrounded with beautiful shrubs. The nearest tourist spot is Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary.

Kailasakona or Kailasanatha Kona

Waterfalls in Chittoor

This is a natural waterfall in the valley of Nagari Hills. There is a temple of Lord Shiva and Goddesses Parvati near that waterfall. It is located near Puttoor. The water of the fall is rich in minerals and so has natural healing power and is famous for healing ailments. The Puranas describe that the water fall was used by Kailasanatheswara Swamy for meditation after attending the marriage of Lord Venkateshwara and Goddess Padmavathi at Narayanavanam. This is the reason for naming this place as Kailasanath Kona.

Kalyani Dam

The dam falls under Rangampet forest. It is a picnic spot. The drinking water for pilgrims and residents is preserved in this reservoir. It is situated near Tirupati on Tirupati-Madanapalli Road. It is the main source of water for Tirupati and Tirumala.

How to reach Chittoor


By Road 
Chittoor is well connected via road. Chittoor lies on Chennai – Bangalore national highway NH4. The APSRTC bus service is available from Chittoor to other places like Chennai, Bangalore, Tirupati, etc. 

By Air
Chittoor does not have its own airport. The nearest domestic and international airport is Tirupati. People can also avail the facilities of Chennai airport which is at a distance of 154km from the airport. A taxi can be hired after reaching any of these airports to reach Chittoor. 

By Train
Chittoor railway station is an important railway station of the district. Other railway station near Chittoor is Tirupati. The Chittoor station lies on Renigunta-Katpadi rail line of southern railway is well connected with many other cities of India. On reaching Tirupati railway station one can hire a taxi to reach Chittoor.
